John Wellham died some eighteen months ago at the age of 87 and was the last survivor of the Royal Naval raid on Taranto; the last nail in the coffin of the principle of the battleship - and a fillip to British morale which was at a low ebb at that stage of the conflict.
He had what used to be known as "a good war" and this well-crafted account provides fascinating reading. At once poignant and exciting, humorous and sad, it chronicles his time from ab initio training through flying service in the Fleet Air Arm with the Mediterranean Fleet to the Far East actions now seemingly forgotten by history. The book is a fascinating account of life in the FAA, never regarded by the general public as the most glamorous of the services, and so opens up a window on a scene not widely known by later generations.
A remarkably well written and interesting story. I recommend the book without reservation.
