Edward Steichen, as Director of the Navel Photographic Institute during WW2, is the one to thank for these wonderful photos. He made a wise choice in choosing photographers like Wayne Miller, Howard Liberman or Charles Jacobs to record the Home Front military effort. Like the famous Farm Security Administration photos from the Depression years the images were made for use in civilian and military newspapers, magazines, posters or anywhere that would keep the patriotic spirit alive.
The 150 plus photos are in two sections: training and military work. They all put over a positive image especially the work ones though there are no WAVES with dirty hands or uniforms despite much of the work involving heavy machinery and many of photos are clearly posed to get the best effect. The first section of volunteers going off to camp, training and relaxing put across a message of comradeship and all pulling together (and still having a good time as five shots of a snowball fight at boot camp show).
The photos (in 175dpi) are presented one to a page with generous margins and nicely the captions are either under each photo or on the opposite page. The only thing missing from this interesting book is some background about the WAVES. The author reveals a little in her short intro but I had to go to Wikipedia to learn that this Navy section was part of a much larger ladies only military effort including the WAAC/WAC, ANC, NNC, USMCWR, PHS, SPARS, ARC and WASP (the website: Blitzkrieg Baby had plenty on uniforms, insignia and general background stuff).
Making Waves is a collection of wonderful no-nonsense photos that had to work at the time but now decades later their quality is still apparent.

Every naval officer, regular or reserve, active or retired, should own a copy of this book. Its guidance and advice to officers is as relevant as when this pocket-book was issued 65 years ago. Of special note for all in the naval service is this: "Never forget that the Ratings have few rights; but they definitely have got a right to good officers". This book is an excellent gift for any naval officer or any who are interested in naval history. I cannot commend it too highly. GAFC

This handbook, created to provide naval officers in World War II with advice and instruction on all aspects of their job, captures the benevolent language of the day, when authority was respected. It features an Officer's Aide Memoire, with notes from officer training school; information for medical officers treating battle casualties afloat; counsel for captains taking command of their first ship; and guidance on handling ships and dealing with disobedience and mutiny. Historian Brian Lavery provides an introduction and commentary throughout.

Benedict Arnold's Navy: The Ragtag Fleet That Lost the Battle of Lake Champlain but Won the American Revolution

James Nelson is an author to be envied if the notion of putting pen to paper and telling a story, whether it be fact or fiction has ever occurred to you. In the fourteen books he has written he has done both fiction and non-fiction superbly.
His previous non-fiction efforts have focused on the civil war navies and in particular the Confederate Navy, which is a little told, but very interesting facet of that war.
His fiction pieces have dealt with pirates and with the Revolutionary War and hopefully there will be more of those forthcoming as well.
In his latest he takes a man whose name stands for treachery and tells of his role in helping America to ultimate victory during our war for independance.
Benedict Arnold, the ultimate traitor, was for 30 months one of America's most stalwart military figures enduring great sacrifice and exhibiting much bravery.
Those of us who live in Maine are familiar with the story of Arnold's March to Quebec and The Arnold Trail is a route through Maine which somewhat follows that daring and brave adventure. For a number of years, I have fished and hunted in the area of Chain of Ponds and Coburn Gore where Arnold and his men passed through and while it is generally known that it was a difficult passage, you have no idea until you have read Mr. Nelson's account of it.
This is a definitive account of a part of the Revoltionary War which has received scant attention until now, so if well written history interests you, let James Nelson take you through it. It is quite a trip!

Lieut. Ringle is among the first to examine the many aspects of sailors' lives during the American Civil War. He examines topics such as the recruiting efforts of the U.S. Navy, compensation and promotion, training, entertainment, and disease to name but a few. This book is not the most eloquently written piece, but the extensive research and sheer fact that this is one of the first books to examine this aspect of CW naval history makes it a must for any American naval library. I find it valuable as a reference for topics that are difficult to find sources on (recruitment, etc.).

SHIPS OF THE ROYAL NAVY: A Complete Record of all Fighting Ships of the Royal Navy from the 15th Century to the Present
Average Reviews:

Originally a 2-volume set in 1968, Volume 1 ("major warhips") has been updated up to 2006, and apparently includes some minor vessels that are "warships" - - with the original author deceased, it apppears the remainding co-author is left to carry on (w/ 40 years of naval service) and has evolved Vol. 1 into a single, prime title.
Basically, it is a list in a book -- ships names are in alphabetical order, with abbreviated info of type ("aircraft carrier"), light displacement (e.g. 22,000 tons), 2 dimensions (l & w, no draft), original armament (no cal lengths), builder (e.g. Cammell Laird), launch date, disposition (e.g. sunk 14.11.41 by U.81 off Gibraltar).
The list is arranged in 2 columns per page - - - the book is a medium format (9.5" x 6.5") hard cover -- there are NO photos, drawings or illustrations except for the cover.
For pre-20th RN navy lists, you should consider the David Lyon 2-book references (large format), but they are (very) expensive and also have no illustrations.
As a list book, "Ships" is as complete as they come and reasonable priced (when discounted), but you will have to refer to other books to get anything other than abbrev. data.

As a former navy officer and writer on navy themes I treasure my copy of The Naval Officer's Guide. It is a handy, up-to-date reference that authoritatively addresses vital aspects of leadership and knowledge in the sea service--even to a glossary of slang expressions and a primer on military law. An excellent research source for anyone interested in the way the real navy operates. Should be in every junior officer's pocket. The new material by Commander McComas is particularly valuable and builds on an impressive compendium of naval facts.

Grand Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz (1849--1930) was the principal forcebehind the rise of the German Imperial Navy prior to World War I, challenging GreatBritain's command of the seas. As State Secretary of the Imperial Naval Office from1897 to 1916, Tirpitz wielded great power and influence over the national agendaduring that crucial period. By the time he had risen to high office, Tirpitz waswell equipped to use his position as a platform from which to dominate Germandefense policy. Though he was cool to the potential of the U-boat, heenthusiastically supported a torpedo boat branch of the navy and began an ambitiousbuilding program for battleships and battle cruisers. Based on exhaustive archivalresearch, including new material from family papers, Tirpitz and the Imperial GermanNavy is the first extended study in English of this germinal figure in the growth ofthe modern navy.

U.S. Navy (U.S. Military Series)

If you love the Navy, whether you're in the Navy or you know someone who is in the Navy, then this is the book for you. Don't be fooled by the admittedly somewhat drab cover, this book is crammed chock full of Naval heritage in glorious full color. From John Paul Jones and the earliest beginnings of the U.S. Navy to OPERATION DESERT STORM, this book tells the living story of the world's finest Navy, and the men who helped make it the world's finest Navy.
Until the aircraft came along in the early 1900s, the only way any nation could project power overseas was with its Navy, and the United States Navy was consequently a major force in the history of the United States. An un-biased history, this book tells it like it is, from the Navy's most thrilling victories at Midway and Leyte Gulf, and its ignominious defeats at Pearl Harbor and Hampton Roads. Yet when called upon, the Navy has always risen to the occasion, and done all that was asked of it and more.

The Great Wall at Sea, Second Edition: China's Navy in the Twenty-First Century
Average Reviews:

I have decided to buy this book to read for myself and see if China of the 21st Century is going to be a benigning nation or practice hegemony, like the present-day U.S. which is using its naval power to "interfere" with other nations on this planet...! I hope that China, my ancestorial homeland would one day have a powerful navy to defend its long coastline as well as its island territories on East China Sea and the South China Sea. These islands have been China's inherent and historic territories since ancient times and there are ample documentary evidence to prove her ownership. Also, I hope, as an overseas Chinese, China would also expeditely build at least two aircraft carriers, nuclear-powered, so that they could fly the flag of the nation overseas as well as assured smaller nations of her protection. During the time of the native Ming Dynasty (1421 A.D.) China has a fleet of ocean-going warships commandered by the legendary Admiral Zheng He sailed as far west as the west coast of Africa. He and his benigning naval forces also quelled some local uprisings and were a force of goodness and greatly welcomed in every country he visited. In particularly, he was reverentially remembered in Malacca, Malaysia, where a temple was built in his name and a well in which he or she who could drink the water will be blessed...! Thus, let's hope that the coming Chinese aircraft carriers sailing upon the waves of the world would bring peace and harmony to all nations and give hell to the forces of darkness...especially the cowardly Somalia pirates...!

Team Secrets Of The Navy Seals Review

Team Secrets Of The Navy Seals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did not read anything in this book that I would consider a secret. But I do think this is a very good book on leadership and team-building. I have read many leadership/team-building books and all have a few nuggets that make the book a worthwhile read. This book had all of those and more.
I have spent time in the military and have seen awesome levels of dedication to team. Sometimes this attitude can be transferred or built up in a civilian organization. But it takes a lot more work.
The problem as I see it is that the Seals are all volunteers and they really want to be the baddest mothers on the planet. They like to be cold, wet, and tired, and actually ask for more to prove they can handle anything. While in the civilian world, that kind of dedication is almost non-existent. While there are many people that don't mind, or even like, to work hard, they all know that when the whistle blows, its Miller time and they can go to their comfortable homes.
As far as the civilian world goes, you can try to build a great team, but you will never come close to the dedication of an elite military unit, not just Seals, but all branches have their elite teams. It just seems that you cannot build this culture because corporate America does not like it when you push your people past their known limits. Yes, you will make them better people, but companies are worried about lawsuits, not having the best team in the corporate world.
This book, if read and followed, will make you and your team better and more productive. The book goes into many subjects, like "know what you've got", "have an open door policy", "the menace of micromanagement", "have teammates, not lackeys", and a few others. While most of this may seem to be commonsense, I felt it was good to be reminded of these and to also have the author present a topic I am familiar with in a different light. Sometimes hearing something from a new angle makes it stick better.
This is an easy read and if you lead a team or want to be a better teammate, then this book is definitely worth the small cost. I recommend it and will read it again in the near future to make sure that the lessons taught here stick.

Team Secrets of the Navy SEALs is written especially for business professionals who want to make it in today's extremely aggressive business environment. No force or unit has ever had more success than the SEALs. Author Robert Needham uses the lessons he's learned as a Navy SEAL to guide the reader through the role of being or becoming a leader. "To some, leadership is exemplified by the blind obedience to orders. It is a misconception that to coerce another person to do your bidding makes you a 'leader.'"Navy SEALs are recognized around the world as being the best. From their start as Naval Combat Demolition Units (NCDU) in WWII to the founding of the SEALs in 1962, only 8,000 men have been allowed to join this top-notch unit. Needham is still on active duty as a SEAL and knows how to achieve results. "The ruthless effectiveness and efficiency of the SEAL Teams stems from the fact that we always start from, perfect, and practice the basics. The Team is a dynamic that works toward success, not hindered by pride, preservation, and self-interest."Needham's principles define and illustrate the word "team," and they will motivate business people working toward that common goal.

There are very few books that I've "had" to have the first day out - this was one - and it didn't disappoint! This book is a good window into the life of a merchant seaman in general and specifically into life on a ship running along the East coast of Africa. It was very interesting to understand the thought process of Capt Phillips while under attack and during his time as a hostage. Best wishes to Captain Phillips and his family! Rich Madden

Fly Navy: Discovering the Extraordinary People and Enduring Spirit of Naval Aviation Review

Fly Navy: Discovering the Extraordinary People and Enduring Spirit of Naval Aviation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a long-time and now-retired Naval Aviator, I recently read "Fly Navy" and was blown away by its accuracy, depth and scope in covering 100 years of Naval Aviation. Bravo Zulu in naval parlance since fighting days of old, means job well done. Mr. Townley has done a remarkable job of writing about the true meaning of duty, honor and country through the eyes of hundreds of Americans who have served so nobly and who have made and shaped the Naval Aviation we know today. From the pilots flying the jets, to the astronauts of yesteryear, to the heroic POWs, to the carrier commanding officers, he has painted a montage of excellence, courage and tenacity. So too, has he brought to light those not so visible: the 19-year-old plane captain, the young rescue swimmer, the carrier chef serving 19,000 meals a day and to those left behind on the home front of hometown USA. The author is not simply an armchair writer: he has travelled widely, both ashore and on board deployed ships and carriers, and, my guess, talked to around 1,000 folks of all sizes and descriptions from the top to bottom. "Fly Navy" is all original and aptly captures the spirit, the intensity and challenges of real Americans who have done and are doing the tough job 24/7, both ashore and at sea. My compliments and a well-earned BZ to Mr. Townley for a job exceptionally well done. Peter B. Booth, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy retired.

On Seas Contested: The Seven Great Navies of the Second World War Review

On Seas Contested: The Seven Great Navies of the Second World War
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here is a book with structure and content like no other. On Seas Contested is not a single narrative, but rather seven chapters that provide parallel information regarding the major naval powers of World War II: France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, the United States and the Soviet Union. For each one, the outline incorporates pre-war history, mission, command structure, doctrine, ships, aviation, weapon systems, infrastructure and wartime evolution plus a summary and assessment.
Such a compilation would have been beyond the qualifications of any individual author. Accordingly, the editors have entrusted each chapter to one (or more) who can bring to his subject a working knowledge of 60 years' research and reflection. It would be a treat to find such a survey for any individual navy; to find it for seven in parallel is a tour de force.
The book's organization invites jumping among chapters even on first reading and helps make it a useful continuing reference. Even knowledgeable readers will likely find much here that is new. Well done.

They provide a point-by-point evaluation on the inner workings of the navies of the United States, the United Kingdom and Commonwealth, Japan, Germany, Italy, France, and the Soviet Union. Patrick O'Brian's Navy: The Illustrated Companion to Jack Aubrey's World Review

Patrick O'Brian's Navy: The Illustrated Companion to Jack Aubrey's World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Patrick O'Brian's Navy: The Illustrated Companion to Jack Aubrey's World" is one of those books that doesn't really have an author. Richard O'Neill is listed as the Consulting Editor, but the Editor and Indexer is Philip de Ste. Croix, and there are a number of "Contributors" including David Miller, who has his own Jack Aubrey-related book coming out soon ("The World of Jack Aubrey").
This is a handsome coffee table-size volume, about 150 pages long, and heavily illustrated. The illustrations may be its strongest point - hundreds of them, mostly contemporary to Jack Aubrey's era and mostly reproduced in vivid color. I have seen many of them before, but usually in black-and-white, so even just on this score, "Patrick O'Brian's Navy" is an attractive addition to a historical nautical library. And there are some modern illustrations as well, usually in the form of diagrams to show complex information such as sail and rigging designations, crew assignments, and the arrangement of watches. Other data is conveyed in tabular form, like those for uniform details, prize money distribution, and crew organization for various ship classes.
Although the primary focus is upon the Royal Navy, there are also chapters devoted to what might be called the geo-political world of the Napoleonic Era. There is a conscious effort to tie all this to Jack Aubrey and the O'Brian novels, with the text, detailing historical events in which Jack took part (including those before the start of the book series) and occasionally providing sidebars titled "Through Aubrey's Eyes" that relate particular subjects to volume and chapter of the novels. Although the overall level of information presented cannot equal that in Brian Lavery's "Nelson's Navy", this is nonetheless an interesting compendium of facts and anecdotes.
There are also two short addendums: "A Cast of Characters" listing the major people and ships in the O'Brian novels and describing their actions and fates, and a Glossary of nautical terms and slang.

From the moment that Master and Commander, the first of Patrick O'Brian's sequence of 20 novels about the 19th century British Royal Navy officer Jack Aubrey and his surgeon colleague Stephen Maturin, was published in 1970, critics hailed his work as a masterpiece of historical recreation. Called "the best historical novels ever written" by the New York Times, the books have sold millions of copies. This first full-color illustrated companion to the Aubrey-Maturin series, timed to coincide with the release of the blockbuster Twentieth-Century Fox film adaptation starring Russell Crowe, explains the fascinating physical details of Jack Aubrey's fictional world. An in-depth historical reference, it brings to life the political, cultural, and physical setting of O'Brian's novels. Annotated drawings, paintings, and diagrams reveal the complex parts of a ship and its rigging, weaponry, crew quarters and duties, below-deck conditions, and fighting tactics, while maps illustrate the location featured in each novel.

Leadership Lessons of the U.S. Navy SEALS : Battle-Tested Strategies for Creating Successful Organizations and Inspiring Extraordinary Results Review

Leadership Lessons of the U.S. Navy SEALS : Battle-Tested Strategies for Creating Successful Organizations and Inspiring Extraordinary Results
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I chose to buy and read this book because one of its authors was a Navy SEAL, and it promised to highlight military leadership lessons from a SEAL perspective. I soon discovered an outstandingly balanced and informative organizational leadership book that took an honest military leadership perspective and effectively applied it directly and indirectly to civilian business environments. This real-world leadership book should appeal to any military-related person and anyone interested in better understanding the military and business leadership connection.
This book was written by a brother duo, one a successful corporate executive and the other an experienced SEAL officer. In their introduction, they accurately assessed what made the book stand apart from other leadership books I have read: "Be forewarned: This book does not pay homage to godlike CEOs, legendary generals, and other corporate cult figures. It is our view that masterful leadership and effective teams, not colorful mavericks, produce success...Every great leader has a great team above, around, and behind him or her...[The book is] a collection of lessons from SEAL training and SEAL operations that have been tested in the business world."
The book is broken down into six chapters (Setting Goals, Organization-Create Structure or Fight Alone, Leadership-The Hardest Easy Thing, The Thundering Herd, Building a Thundering Herd, and Now Maintain Your Momentum), with embedded lessons related to each chapter title. Each lesson starts with a SEAL mission (a SEAL team sea-story or experience) and ends with a suggested business take-away. The lessons stimulated thought and offered ideas for improving individual and organizational leadership. The authors left it to the readers to decide which lessons applied to their situations and then challenged them to apply those lessons.
The authors' candid perspectives and observations were refreshing and were reflected in their equally straightforward lessons. A sampling of the authors' colorful lessons includes:
*Avoid creating a capability and then looking for a mission to justify it
*Build boundaries to prevent infighting and cannibalism
*If you think no one else can replace you, you're an egotistical S.O.B. who's failed
*There are probably good reasons why your marching orders seem screwed up
*Identify your lead dogs, feed them well, and build a pack around them
*If you need to scream, you need to practice
The team-building and teamwork concepts emphasized in this book apply to military and business leaders and organizations. If you want time-tested ideas to improve your leadership, or your organization's effectiveness, then you should read this book.
