The Royal Navy had considered converting merchant ship hulls into escort carriers before the Second World War, but it was not until 1940 that the Admiralty actually began conversion of a captured German freighter into HMS Audacity. All told, the Royal Navy built 44 escort carriers during the war and they played a critical role in winning the Battle of the Atlantic. In Royal Navy Escort Carriers, Commander David Hobbs, RN provides a 2-5 page history of each escort carrier, along with plentiful photographs. The volume also has 11 appendices, ranging from technical details of each class to embarked air units and a photo tour inside an escort carrier. This book is designed for the specialist reader and it is very useful as such, but it is not a general or campaign history.
