This is a first-hand account of the experiences of a Danish-speaking German who began the Great War in the naval barracks, found himself part of a crew of a blockade runner and then wound up in German East Africa, a rather reluctant participant in General Lettow-Vorbeck's fight to keep the British from taking over the Kaiser's last overseas colony.
Nis Kock's account of running the British blockade in Europe, life on board the blockade runner (which was supposed to be Danish, and thus the need for Danish speakers) and the adventures of the crewman who, having delivered their supplies for the colony found themselves stranded in Africa after the sinking of their ship. The crewman were soon put to good use in German East Africa, serving in the defense forces and in a variety of functions where it was necessary to have some sort of education or experience. Kock was pressed to become an ordnance "expert" and was responsible for repairing and modifying weapons and explosives. The harsh conditions of traveling and fighting in Africa are recounted by the young sailor and it is a good read if you can find it. An excellent book on a forgotten campaign.
Some good photos but they distributed throughout the book rather carelessly. Also, a pair of very good maps.
