The fighting fleets;: Five months of active service with the American destroyers and their allies in the war zone, Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this book because my paternal grandfather served on the USS Jacob Jones in WWI which was initially part of this US destroyer fleet. He was one of the survivors of its sinking so I have wanted to learn as much as I could about this particular time in our military history to help me understand some of what he might have experienced. I was not disappointed. The book is so well written with Ralph Paine's very descriptive and detailed firsthand accounts. I realized, from the author's wealth of information, the grit, determination and dedication to the cause of victory that was prevalent at the time in spite of the great pain and personal sacrifice that so many endured both as military personnel and as private citizens. He also included many amazing old photographs to help illustrate his points. If you like military history, especially WWI naval history, you will enjoy this book. I was truly sorry when I reached the final page!
