For those who have always had a fascination for the era of undersea combat, US Silent Service: Dolphins & Combat Insignia, 1924-1945 provides a look at history rarely seen. A wealth of images and stories is contained here, from the pictures of the men who served aboard America's submarines to the boats and details of the insignia that set them apart.
In compiling this book, David Jones has provided us with a lasting history of tales from the men who served in cramped (and often terrifying) conditions. It provides us with a glimpse of a world very few have known, and hopefully fewer will ever need to know.
For anyone who has looked into the history of naval combat in general, World War II and submarine combat in particular, this volume is a must. From the images of posters of the era to the period photos and modern close-ups of the "Dolphins," the level of detail is incredible.
