As with other books in this series, this is another photographic journey through time in a single place - that place, on this occasion, being Malta. This is a nostalgic look at both the Royal Navy's and Malta's maritime past and brings to mind many of the long-lost traditions of service in a foreign land. The B&W photographs are all quite stunning and include images of many types of ship which are, of course, now gone forever because none - not even the famous Ark Royals, were ever preserved for posterity.
From those turn-of-the-century mighty ships whose dominance was quickly superseded by the technological pace of change of the day, up to some of the, perhaps, lesser ships which were a feature of the Royal Navy almost 100 years later, this is a selection of photographs to whet the appetite of all those engaged in naval history and research or simply with an interest in the subject. In short, this book is a photographic journey through time and history itself.
I have made a study of Malta's ships and naval history, so it was, therefore, with a little knowledge of the subject that I sat down to read this book. I was not disappointed. Arranged in approximate date order, the first photograph is of HMS Leviathan steaming out of Grand Harbour in 1905. Many of the more famous names which either endured - or were even lost, during the two world wars which affected this country so desperately, are also included.
There is also a photograph of the final moments of the brave, yet ill-fated Ohio as she eventually met her final watery grave.
It would be so easy to continue commenting on so many more of the photograph as the story of Malta's famous harbour and it's role throughout the 20th Century slowly unfolds in pictures.
Yes, I would prefer more text but not at the expense of any photograph or even at the cost of reducing those photographs in size. Altogether, an excellent book which will be enjoyed by a good many people.
