The sequel, The Oyster Navy, is even more fascinating than The Oyster Wars. A very complex and exciting plot involving actual historical events will not let you quit reading. I pride myself in discerning the ending of a book in advance, but was totally surprised this time. Mr. Faulkner's experience in criminal investigation is clearly evident.
Besides the intrigue over harvesting oysters from the Chesapeake Bay, this story brings in other historical topics such as Woman's Suffrage and the plight of the blacks after the Civil War. I especially appreciated the portrayal of several strong, intelligent female characters and the complexity of fascinating family relationships. I'd love to see these books made into a movie filmed on and around the Chesapeake Bay.

In 1868, Maryland's embryonic maritime law enforcement agency, the State Oyster Police, set out on its mission to enforce the states laws on the Chesapeake Bay. The force, quickly dubbed The Oyster Navy, met stubborn and often violent resistance. Haynie McKenna, the agency's deputy commander, serves as captain of the steamer Leila. With a crew of untested officers, he heads to the Honga River in search of a rogue waterman, Marrok Blanchard and his sons.
