I thought this was a great read. Splendid illustrations, well written text. Qucik, easy, and enjoyable. I wanted to know more about the famous battle between the Monitor and Viginia, but didn't want to be bogged down with the text, and I wanted a well illustrated volume. I'm sure that this subject has been written on to no end, but I was more than pleased with this work.

Previously published in three separate volumes as Campaign 103: Hampton Roads 1862, New Vanguard 41: Confederate Ironclad 1861-65 and New Vanguard 45: Union Monitor 1861-65.When the ironclad USS Monitor steamed out to meet the CSS Virginia on 9 March 1862, the face of naval warfare was changed forever. A four-hour duel left neither ship victorious, but in the wake of the battle wooden warships were rendered obsolete. This book details the clash at Hampton Roads, as well as tracing the development of ironclads within the Union and Confederate fleets. Union ironclads evolved quickly from the time of the production of the Monitor, so that by the end of the war the US Navy possessed the most powerful artillery afloat. The Confederate fleet, meanwhile, was born out of the hulks of existing vessels in naval yards and backwaters within sight of the enemy - its very existence was a tribute to the ingenuity of Southern shipbuilders.

Introduction of the Ironclad Warship (Classics of Naval Literature) Review

Introduction of the Ironclad Warship (Classics of Naval Literature)

This is a must-read for anyone interested in ironclad development. Well written and thorough, it provides a great foundational read for anyone interested in the field. Newer books cover specific ships or technologies in more detail and are frequently based on newly found archival information, but this book provides the sweep and scope they miss. It is not highly technical. Great history well written.

The Confederate Navy: The Ships, Men and Organization, 1861-65 Review

Although intended as a companion book to Lincoln's Navy: The Ships, Men and Organization, 1861-65 by Donald L. Canney, this book is also very useful in conjunction with A History of the Confederate Navy by Raimondo Luraghi, which is the definitive book on the CS Navy.
The book is organized by topics (such as shipbuilding, types of ships) and presents these topics in more detail that is generally found in Luraghi's book. While I was hoping that it would include a Jane's-like section with drawings or photographs of every ship, this book is well illustrated. (For even more illustrations see The Confederate Navy - A Pictorial History by Philip Van Doren Stern.)
Highly recommended.

This comprehensive guide to the Confederate Navy, covers the ships and men, the organization and facilities, the strategy and tactics, and compiles the operations, including those on the Western rivers. Although short-lived, the Confederate States Navy was one of the most innovative of all time, introducing the ironclad, the spar torpedo, a nd the submersible to naval warfare, and re-defining classic strategies, such as commerce raiding for the steam age. It was a scratch force, created almost overnight and always short of resources, but its achievements were considerable.

Warships of the Civil War Navies Review

Warships of the Civil War Navies

It is a general description on nearly all vessels of the ACW. Format entry for all vessels including small tugs. I found it to be a great reference for tabletop wargaming the ACW navy period. Many authors of game rules should read this. It lists all the guns and modifications to the number and type of guns during the war. However, early sailing vessels used in the war are lightly covered and can be found in detail in another book for that period.
