Ironclad: The Epic Battle, Calamitous Loss, and Historic Recovery of the USS Monitor Review

Ironclad: The Epic Battle, Calamitous Loss, and Historic Recovery of the USS Monitor
Average Reviews:

Warning; once you start this book cancel your other plans. This is definitely a cover to cover read. Clancy skillfully weaves the tale of Monitor from its conception to the Battle of Hampton Roads, through its untimely demise to its remarkable recovery. His approach it unusual in that he weaves the two tales of the 19th century Monitor against the drama of the recovery of the ironclad's turret.
While Clancy is admittedly not an engineer he is an accomplished sailor with a sense of history. He draws extensively on this knowledge to explain the Battle of Hampton Roads, why the ironclad sunk and how it was recovered (not salvaged). His descriptions of the rising seas and pending storm off Cape Hatteras and how the 19th century sailors judged the weather gave one an insight as to why this area is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
Equally as insightful is the story of the recovery which was woven directly in with the history. This part too is a tribute to brave and dedicated sailors and archeologists whose willingness to commit everything to the task made you race through one chapter if for no other reason than to find out how the "other" story was unfolding.
It's a masterful book, full of information well told. Look out Tom, there's another Clancy on the radar screen.

The true story of the Civil War ironclad that saved the Union Navy only to sink in a storm--and its remarkable salvage 140 years later

Ironclad tells the saga of the warship USS Monitor and its salvage, one of the most complex and dangerous in history. The Monitor is followed through its maiden voyage from New York to Hampton Roads, its battle with the Merrimack, and its loss off Cape Hatteras. At the same time, author Paul Clancy takes readers behind the scenes of an improbable collaboration between navy divers and cautious archaeologists working 240 feet deep.

Clancy creates a memorable, fascinating read, including fresh insights into the sinking of the Union ship and giving the answer to an intriguing forensic mystery: the identities of the two sailors whose bones were found in the Monitor's recovered turret.

U.S. Warships of World War 2 Review

U.S. Warships of World War 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a lifelong Navy buff, and "US Warships of World War II" has been one of my favorites for 30 years. Every American warship in service 1939-45 is included, from battleships to Army troop transports to sub chasers and PT boats. The fate of every ship disposed of prior to the early 1960's is included. It would be great if some buff such as myself (with more time than I have) would research the fate of the other ships and update the book in a new edition, since all but a handful of the ships have been scrapped by now. My only complaint about this book (and the other Ian Allen "Warships of World War II" books) is that the launching date and not the commissioning date is given for each ship. I really wish that the series were reprinted. The only comparable book that I am aware of is "Jane's Fighting Ships of World War II", which has the advantage of including the minor navies.

Corvettes of the Royal Canadian Navy: 1939-1945 Review

Corvettes of the Royal Canadian Navy: 1939-1945

I have read this book several times. The authors give a clear picture of the Corvette's history; as a class of warship, regarding its development and modification during the war. I heartily recommend the book for its historical perspective. Its store of photographs for the historian and especially for the modeller of that great little ship.

No other warship is so intimately connected with Canada'snaval heritage as the ubiquitous corvette of WWII.Despite theimportance of the corvette to Canadian history, no reliable history ofthe class has ever been published. This book is a concise and popularaccount of the corvette in Canadian service during WWII.

Under Two Flags: The American Navy in the Civil War Review

Under Two Flags: The American Navy in the Civil War

Concise and clearly written, Under Two Flags is a good review on the Navel engagements fought during the Civil War. It is at once an interesting overview for knowledgeable students of the war and a very good introduction to those unfamiliar with this dimension of the conflict. Fast paced, easily read, there are passages and fascinating history I have found nowhere else.
Covering confederate raiders, the river campaigns, the blockade and the various assaults upon Confederate ports by combined Union Navy and Army amphibious operations, Fowler delivers a very even handed discussion of this often forgotten aspect of the war. This is worth your time!

HMS RODNEY: The Famous Ships of the Royal Navy Series (Warships of the Royal Navy) Review

HMS RODNEY: The Famous Ships of the Royal Navy Series (Warships of the Royal Navy)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As the illustration on the book's cover reveals, this is a book about the mighty battleship HMS Rodney but, in getting to the subject itself, author Iain Ballantyne provides the reader with 42 fascinating pages of previous Royal Navy vessels of the same name. The first HMS Rodney, for example, was a cutter, the second a 16 gun brig-sloop. With the next being a 74 gun 3rd rate ship of the line and the one after that sporting 92 guns, a picture is painted whereby each successive ship to bear this illustrious name was destined to be larger than its predecessor.
The penultimate Rodney was a Battleship of 10,300 tons launched in 1884 and sold in 1909. Whilst a Battlecruiser of 33,600 tons was ordered in 1916 - as a sister ship to the famous HMS Hood, she was cancelled long before completion. The last HMS Rodney, the subject of this book, was a Battleship of 33,900 tons launched in 1925 and scrapped in 1948 after a career as equally as illustrious as the Admiral after which she was named.
The thing I like most about this book is the attention to detail. HMS Rodney was the last British warship launched with an ornate figurehead - a bust of Admiral Rodney of course. Elsewhere, we learn that, not only was a Royal Marine hanged in 1837 from the yardarm of a previous HMS Rodney, but we also learn much about the implications of his death because he was an Irishman. Whilst that particular incident may be of small consequence to those with an interest in the battleship itself, I mention it in order to underline the fine attention to detail contained within.
This is a book which will reveal something to almost everyone who thought they knew all there was to know about this once great ship. This was one of the capital ships which finally sank the Bismarck, this is the ship which was commanded by Cunningham and later by Tovey - long before they became admirals themselves.
It is a work of supreme research and fascinating insight and I congratulate the author on an excellent achievement.
NM

The Second World War battleship HMS Rodney achieved lasting fame for her role in destroying the pride of Hitler's navy, the mighty Bismarck, in a thrilling duel. This splendid book traces not only this mighty battleship's career in detail but describes the careers of all the ships carrying the name.

Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy, 1869-1945 Hb Review

Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy, 1869-1945 Hb
Average Reviews:

Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy, 1869-1945 is the culmination of three German naval historians in ttempting to document every combatant to serve in the Imperial Japanese Navy. This is the most complete book on the IJN available and contains excellent data on all major and minor warships.
A useful reference for the modeler, the only weakness is the size of the illustrations, which are mostly in 1/1200 scale. The original German edition had better line drawings, but few photos. The strength of this English edition is the collection of photos, many not seen outside of Japan until now. I would rate this as a 4 1/2 star effort and definitely superior to the book by Watts on the same subject.

Warships of the Civil War Navies Review

Warships of the Civil War Navies
Average Reviews:

It is a general description on nearly all vessels of the ACW. Format entry for all vessels including small tugs. I found it to be a great reference for tabletop wargaming the ACW navy period. Many authors of game rules should read this. It lists all the guns and modifications to the number and type of guns during the war. However, early sailing vessels used in the war are lightly covered and can be found in detail in another book for that period.

MR.BERNARD IRELAND is indeed a BRITISH NAVAL SCHOLAR of the world. He has
a lifelong interest in naval history and development, having spent more than 30 years in ship research for the Admiralty in ROYAL NAVAL SCIENTIFIC SERVICE. MR. IRELAND is a REAL EXPERT of WARSHIPS.(please
read my other review of AIRCRAFT CARRIERS by MR.BERNARD IRELAND.)
The CRUISERS is an eye-opener for novice like me about HISTORY, DESIGN,
CONTRUCTIONS, SEA-WARFARES, of the world CRUISERS from Pre-WW I, WW I,
WW II and even to certain period of present time.
It is very interesting to cover such a broad scope of the detailed history of the development of cruisers including so many countries'
naval defense. It is not a easy job!! Mr.BERNARD IRELAND did a great
job for such a good reference for general NAVAL ENTHUSIASTS and in
particularly for young men who might be interested to persuit a career in
NAVY, no matter which country, you are born. Love of SEA, JOIN the NAVY
for NATIONAL SECURITY at SEA. No wonder, the ROYAL BRITISH NAVY is so
advance with the help of brilliant scholar like MR. BERNARD IRELAND!!
However, I would like to suggest Mr.BERNARD IRELAND to publish another
update of this great book in future.(Even the present edition is 2008).
The BOOK: CRUISERS will be more interesting if Mr.IRELAND will cover
more NEW CRUISERS of modern days in COUNTRIES such as: CIS(RUSSIA), there is only one to two pages about USSR, and it's outdated. Then JAPAN's
modern day SELF-DEFENSE NAVY's modern day CRUISERS will be interesting,
then PEOPLE's REPUBLIC of CHINA's MODERN DAY CRUISERS in PRESENT PRC's
NAVY, also TAIWAN's(part of CHINA) also has a NAVAL FORCE. And of course
the most important issue was USA NAVY's coverage was not up to date in
this book!! Mr.Bernard Ireland stopped at the CRUISERS of USA in this book at the:
LONG BEACH (CGN.9) and the CALIFORNIA and VIRGINIA classes only!!
The most important USA CRUISERS such as the GUIDED MISSILE "TICONDEROGA" class CRUISERS which are the Aegis cruisers. Also, the GUIDED MISSILE
"ARLEIGH BURKE" class DESTROYERS which are actually a smaller CRUISER, are
missing in this edition.
Of course, there are the IMPROVED VERSIONS of the both classes too. All these details are missing in this edition of MR. IRELAND's BOOK: CRUISERS,
which making the book outdated and incomplete!!
Again I have strong conviction that MR.IRELAND's books are good books as a primer for HIGH SCHOOL students who are interested with
WARSHIPS!! I strongly recommend every library should keep a volume of
Mr.IRELANDS BOOK!! It is very interesting!!
I am looking forward for MR.IRELAND's future update of this book:
THE WORLD ENCYCLOPEDIA of CRUISERS, 2009 or 2010 perhaps??
I shall share with you my reviews for future editions if you don't mind
my humble opinions!! Until then, I remain your friend from HONG KONG,
CHINA!!
Cheerio!!
BEST REGARDS,
STEPHEN M. YUNG,

The cruiser evolved from a variety of powered sailing warships, employed in independent operations. The impact of rapid technological advance during the Victorian era saw the cruiser quickly assume familiar forms.

Breyer covers a subject about which not much has been previously written, and accompanies the text with some wonderful and rare photos. Those who are students of WWII, and who want to know more about the concept of The Fleet in Being, and the Kriegsmarine's application of it, will learn from, and enjoy, this book. Highly recommended, especially for collectors of WWII naval history.

Mr. Lincoln's Brown Water Navy: The Mississippi Squadron (The American Crisis Series: Books on the Civil War Era) Review

Mr. Lincoln's Brown Water Navy: The Mississippi Squadron (The American Crisis Series: Books on the Civil War Era)
Average Reviews:

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Civil War's Western Theater. The book is a series of eight essays about the inland naval campaigns. The essays are arranged in chronological order so the book follows the creation and history of the inland gunboats used on the Mississippi and its tributaries. The short, easy to read essays capture your interest and the book can be read in several sittings. The author made extensive use of photographs of gunboats, individuals and maps. The maps were good and produced by the author. I especially liked the photographs of the many different types of ironclads, timberclads, tinclads, rams and period engravings. This added a lot to the book. This book was full of details about Union gunboats and some of the unique units in the Mississippi Valley.
