The Tiger Cruise Review

The Tiger Cruise

Truly an exciting, spellbinding book. This author's style of writing is imaginative and unique. I loved the way he explains the "technotalk" to the reader within his characters. For example, when the professor at the seismo lab explains to his students what a deep focus earthquake is or how GPS is used to track earthquakes, he is, at the same time, explaining it to the reader.
The book takes off right from the start and keeps your undivided attention to the very last page. This is difficult for any author to do, much less a new one, and I commend Mr. Thompson for captivating his audience and not letting go. Just when I thought I had something figured out, a new twist or turn would pop up and I was again trying to figure out where the story would wind up. Believe me, it kept my attention where I did not want to put the book down. There are some very famous authors out there who tend to bog down the reader with too many intrinsic, technical details that can "break a story apart." Not true for Thompson. While there are plenty of technical details to go around in The Tiger Cruise, they are handled in such a way to just give you enough - and keep the story moving.
This is not a great novel, but it's damn close. I'll be looking for Thompson's next book, which is sure to come. Great job by a new, and yet unknown author, but not for long. Like the DJ in Tupelo said about Elvis after his first record, "this boy's going nation wide." So too is The Tiger Cruise, and Thompson.

Roberts Ridge: A Story of Courage and Sacrifice on Takur Ghar Mountain, Afghanistan Review

Roberts Ridge: A Story of Courage and Sacrifice on Takur Ghar Mountain, Afghanistan
Average Reviews:

I read this book over a weekend and was pleasantly surprised by it. I read "Not a Good Day to Die" a couple months ago and was waiting for this book to be published so I could compare the two. Of course, "Day" goes into much more detail regarding Operation Anaconda while "Ridge" focuses on the events on a single mountaintop, but I think both were well-written.
I prefer MacPherson's writing style in that he doesn't personalize the story at all. There is no reference to "me" or "I," only the story as told to him by the people involved. I feel that adding one's own voice to a work of non-fiction just makes the writer sound like a braggart and sometimes even discredits the account.
I do think that the target audience for this book is either military-related, or just very quick, because much of the terminology is not explained, especially when it comes to the "slang" style terms and phrases that the branches use in so much of their work.
As a book focusing on the events of Takur Ghar, it was great. However, if you have no idea what Operation Anaconda was about, I would recommend reading "Day" first, because "Ridge" does not go into the set-up of the Operation at all. "Ridge" is a wonderful way to delve further into the seventeen hours of combat operations of so many service members, and the characterization is much deeper than "Day" simply because there are fewer players involved.
I highly recommend this book, but read "Not a Good Day to Die" first if you have no frame of reference for Afghanistan or Operation Anaconda.

SEALs: UDT/ SEAL Operations In Vietnam Review

SEALs: UDT/ SEAL Operations In Vietnam
Average Reviews:

"SEALs" is the book version of a historical master's thesis written by Tim Bosiljevac, a highly respected career SEAL officer (and former enlisted Army Ranger). His work is essentially a diary of SEAL operations in Vietnam. It moves chronologically through the arrival of UDTs in the early 60's to the departure of US forces in 1975. The book's matter of fact description of numerous operations, taken from SEAL Team logs, allows the reader to appreciate the complexity of the intelligence gathering systems employed by the SEALs to generate their own target lists. The detailed descriptions of equipment carried and the synopses of patrol orders allows will appeal to Soldiers interested in finding out how the "best of the best" prepared and executed missions in the Rung Sat. This book is highly recommended for current and former Special Operators.

Hostage (Navy Justice, Book 2) Review

Hostage (Navy Justice, Book 2)
Average Reviews:

'Hostage' is an intense book from start to finish. It contains action, drama, and classic courtroom confrontations.
It begins with terrorists seeking revenge against Lt. Zach Brewer and Lt. Diane Colcernian for the prosecution of some of their cohorts. The terror group also has more moles in the U.S. Navy plotting additional mayhem.
It is a sequel to 'Treason'. A lot of the events and characters are tied into happenings from the first book. I would definitely recommend reading 'Treason' first. Without doing so, I think readers would be missing quite a bit.
I think that this one is even better than the first book. It is extremely well written and keeps the reader on the edge of his/her seat.

Proximity: A Novel of the Navy's Elite Bomb Squad Review

Proximity: A Novel of the Navy's Elite Bomb Squad
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Author Stephen Phillips takes you on a wild ride with one of the Navy's elite Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) teams as they do their part in the Global War on Terror. The main character, LT Jascinski, gave up a promising career as a surface warrior because he wanted to pursue the high-speed low drag world of Navy EOD. In his first billet out of EOD school, he gets all he can handle as he and his team end up in the middle of a world-wide terrorist ring that may just have someone on the inside. Who will have the steady hand, and who will end up as a "big pink mist?"
Phillips writes from experience, and obviously knows what he's talking about. While the story is fiction, the author draws from his years as a Navy EOD Officer-in-Charge to develop the story and provide the technological balance all good military stories need in order to be believable. He also does an excellent job of developing the personal relationships between the LT and his men, the LT and his Chief Petty Officers, and finally the LT and his wife. The result is a fast moving, completely believable action story that's a great read for those who enjoy military fiction, especially Special Operations.

U.S. Marines assault enemy beachheads only after EOD Techs clear the littoral seas and landing zones of mines. The U.S. Secret Service even relies on military bomb squads to protect the President and visiting foreign dignitaries. Perhaps the best testimony of their value is that when the Navy needs to place a limpet mine under an enemy ship it tasks the Navy SEALs, but to respond to such an attack - the Navy summons EOD. Proximity highlights the exciting work of one EOD detachment as they become enmeshed in the efforts of a terrorist coalition operating both in Europe and the United States. Lieutenant "Jazz" Jascinski and the men of Detachment Four become the key to helping the FBI apprehend these terrorists - until their unique skills place them under suspicion. To protect themselves, the Techs must race to find the culprits before they become the next victims...

Defiance (Navy Justice, Book 3) Review

Defiance (Navy Justice, Book 3)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Don Brown is quickly moving up in the ranks of the great novelists. 'Defiance' is a story that is hard to put down. This is the third installment in 'The Navy Justice Series'. Although the others have been very good, this is the best of the lot so far.
Zack Brewer and Diane Colcernian are back as central characters in this novel of courtroom drama, suspense, action, and even romance. Besides the assorted terrorist villains, there is a U.S. senator and presidential candidate, Eleanor Claxton, who is Machavellian to the core. Her machinations add an element of the worst in American politics. It also includes a dramatic rescue attempt by U.S. Navy Seals that has the potential of igniting a major war. In addition to all of the action, there is a spiritual component present for several of the characters facing major crises.
This book will appeal those of varying interests. I recommend it highly.
